Rode Hard, Put Away Wet:
Praise for Rode Hard, Put Away Wet
"Not just for fans of Deadwood, this cowboy-themed lesbian historical erotica anthology comes replete with leather, lust, and riding a horse by day and a woman by night. These realistic lesbian cowboy stories (from Shanna Germain, Connie Wilkins and Patrick Califia among others) have you tasting the grit and feeling the spike of the stirrups as you read."
"Not all the lesbians are cowboys, and not even all the cowboys are lesbian -
but this strong collection of erotica about gals who wear chaps, know their
way around a horse, and can tie a mean knot does live up to its catchy
title. Most of the tales are more sizzling vignette than fully developed
short story, heavy on sexual tension and sex and light on character and
plot. But a few offer some true emotional tone, and so stand out from the
rest. Cheyenne Blue's "The Other Side of the Rockies" is a slight but
wrenching story about a woman rescued from her husband's abuse by a
cowgirl's strong arms. Jay Lake's "Dry Heart, Dreaming" is a numbing,
humbling story about a widow, trying to save her ranch in the midst of a
devastating drought, who opens herself to the love of a lady rancher. And
Connie Wilkins' "Snowfound," with some historical heft, is about a
cross-dressing Civil War soldier who, after the war, finds a woman she can
love in the Sierra gold country of California."
"A stimulation collection of Western-themed short
fiction Rode Hard, Put Away Wet: Lesbian Cowboy Erotica is sure
to stoke the embers of many a Sapphic campfire. Editors Sacchi Green
("The Flight of the Prairie Lily") and Rakelle Valencia ("Mail Order
Bride, Chapter 11") - who contribute two tantalizing stories apiece
- have compiled works spanning both history and the globe, from the
Conestoga migrations of "Wagon's Ho" by Fargo Wellington to Green's
"Bull Rider" set in Amsterdam. And there are as many he variations in
plot as explicitly kinky encounters.
"As someone who has never particularly been drawn to horses, cowbois, or cowgirls, I found that I couldn't read too many stories from this book in one sitting - too many sentences like "No more mutterin' somethin' about somethin'" got to me after awhile (from "Franky and Johnny" by Jake Rich). But I kept getting drawn back to this book because the stories were hot, the characters compelling, and perhaps even because the surroundings (barns, rodeos, ranches, old-west bordellos) are not the usual settings for the erotica I generally read. Pieces I especially enjoyed included "Independence" by Caralee Levy, about a post-Civil War, all-female team of cattle drivers, and Shanna Germain's "Western Pleasure" about the once-a-year reunions of two rodeo riders."
"I'll be honest and admit I hadn't encountered much lesbian cowboy erotica before reading this anthology but it's easy to see why this variation on the genre is so popular. The women are strong (and they are attractive because of that) and they are succeeding in the manliest corner of a man's world. release: June 2005 |
